New Delhi: Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria on Thursday said police will take action against those who assaulted five people for allegedly illegally transporting cows in Behror of Alwar district on Saturday.
In the same breath, Kataria defended the FIR filed against those who were beaten, including Pehlu Khan who later died due to his injuries.
"No one has the right to take law in one's hand and take action," he told reporters, but added, "Gau Rakshaks try to stop those who indulge in such crimes (of bovine smuggling)".
Kataria said that the problem was from both the sides and action against all those involved in it will be taken by the police. He said that the group who were ferrying cows did not have proper documentation and when police asked them they failed to produce documents.
Pehlu, said to be in his fifties, was beaten up along with other members of his family on National Highway 8 in Rajasthan's Alwar district on Saturday.
His family, however, maintain that they had proper documents. The vigilantes started beating them upon finding out that they were Muslims, they alleged.
“We were coming from a mela in Jaipur. We were stopped near Behror by some people. We showed them the receipt of sale and purchase. They said they are from Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal and started beating us. They even tore the receipt. They came prepared with hockey sticks and belts," said Irshad Khan, Pehlu’s son.
On being asked if a particular community was being targeted, Kataria said, “We can also provide media the list of Hindus who were engaged in such cow smuggling."
Speaking to News18, Alwar Superintendent of Police, Rahul Prakash, said the police have registered three FIRs — one against suspects who attacked Pehlu and group, and other against the group transporting the cattle themselves.
