Srinagar: It seems the global economic meltdown has not even spared the Hurriyat Conference (HC). On Monday the amalgam has wound up all its district offices and slashed funds to its 26 general council constituents by 50 per cent.

"The financial recession is a world wide phenomenon and its effects are inevitable. We have closed down district offices and reduced staff strength as a measure of reforms," Hurriyat sources said on Monday.

Even the kitchen at the central office has been closed in view of financial crunch being faced by the HC, they added.

The separatist conglomerate faced a humiliating situation as the people almost ignored its call for boycott of the recently held assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

The district offices set up ahead of elections for enforcing boycott served no purpose, the sources said adding during polls many leaders were arrested but the district units did not play any role at their level to enforce boycott.

However, they said, there are many leaders in Hurriyat who enjoy mass support in their native areas and the time has come for them to shift from Srinagar to these places and strengthen the HC in rural areas.

To reestablish contact with the people, Hurriyat leaders belonging to different parties have to remain in villages and raise the issues being faced by them, the sources said.

"Hurriyat cannot solve problems faced by the people but it can raise their issues. The leaders of the amalgam have to remain in contact with the people and focus on their problems in their areas," the sources said.
