Two persons fell victim to the road rage of a Red Killer in the city on Friday

Two persons died and five were seriously injured when a private bus lost control and dashed into two shops at Karimugal junction near Ambalamugal on Friday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Mariswami, 50, a Tamil, and Kunjumon, 47.  According to police, the incident took place around 6.30 am when the private bus coming from Kakkanad lost control following break failure, and dashed against the shops on the roadside.

It took quite some time for the rescue operations to begin as the bus got stuck inside a shop. A crane had to be used to remove the bus, police said.

The bus plies on the Tripunithura-Kakkanad route and was on the way to Tripunithura to pick up passengers, said M M Mohanan, Sub-Inspector, Tripunithura Traffic police station.

According to an eye-witness, had it not been for the Ramzan season the hotel would have been packed with customers at breakfast time.  “Since it was Ramzan month the hotel was not open. Usually by 7 am several children wait in front of the shop for school buses. The casualty would have been much higher if it  had happened a few minutes later,” he said.

The bus driver and his assistant fled the scene. However, the police claim to have traced them. The police also suspect that the driver was the owner of the bus.

A case has been filed at Tripunithura Traffic police station under Section 279 of the Indian Penal Code (rash driving or riding on a public way).  The injured persons were rushed to a private hospital and are under observation.

The bodies have been kept at a private hospital at Tripunithura and will be taken to the General Hospital for postmortem.
