Navi Mumbai: Holi celebrations turned violent in Ghansoli villager of Navi Mumbai when two groups clashed with each other on Wednesday evening leaving three dead and about 35 injured.
Police had to fire several rounds to bring the situation under control and curfew has been imposed in the village.
The trouble started after residents of Simplex Colony in sector 7 of Navi Mumbai, dominated by Mathadi (porters), allegedly misbehaved with a girl during Holi celebrations.
The groups attacked each other with rods, sticks and stones with the police also coming in under heavy stone pelting by the unruly mob.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Thursday assured the Assembly that the situation at Ghansoli village of Navi Mumbai was under control when the issue of the group clash and police firing on the crowd came up in the House.
Deshmukh said steps are being taken to defuse tension in Ghansoli.
The government would make a statement in the House later on Thursday on the incident, the Chief Minister said.
