Rwanda's Disi sets world record at Delhi Half Marathon
Rwanda's Diudone Disi won the Vodafone Half Marathon clocking 1:00:48 seconds.

New Delhi: Rwanda's Diudone Disi on Sunday won the Vodafone Half Marathon in the Open Elite Male section and Deriba Alemu of Ethopia won in the women's category.

The Rwandian was the favourite to win the title and he clocked 1:00:43 seconds to set a new course record. Kenyan Issac Macharia was second in 1:00:48 seconds and his compatriot Patrick Mbuvi finished third in 1:02.03 seconds.

India's Ram Singh Yadav won the race in the Indian Male section and was 16th overall in the Open Elite Male category with a timing of 1:06:09 seconds. Deep Chand, currently the country's No 1 long distance runner, was second in the Indian male section and was 17th overall after he clocked 1:06:10 seconds.

Another Kenyan, World No 3 Wilson Kiprotich, disappointed as he finished fourth in 1:02.04 secs while his country mate and 2005 champion Philip Rugut was fifth with a timing of 1:02.58 seconds.

With this the 21-km Third Delhi half-marathon sponsored by Vodafone came to a conclusion. Around 28,000 people participated in the race, which offered total prize money of $160,000.

Mapping the Marathon:

The race started from the Central Secretariat Ground at Vinay Marg and moved to Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh Road, Sri Aurobindo Marg, Prithviraj Road, and took the Mansingh Road towards Janpath.

Four races were held - beginning with the senior citizens' run at 0710 hrs (IST), followed by the main event, flagged off at 0745 hrs (IST).

Around 2,300 runners took part in the senior citizens' run, 7,000 for the half-marathon, 200 for the wheelchair event and 18,500 people participated in the Great Delhi Run.

Around 41 corporate houses pledged to raise over Rs.12 million for charity during the event. The event also saw a battery of celebrities cheering on the participants. Among those spotted were actors Gulshan Grover, Priyanka Chopra, cricketer Rahul Dravid and former actress Tina Ambani.
