Thiruvananthapuram: The Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in Kerala on Monday took a u-turn on the issue of women's entry into the Sabarimala temple in Kerala and informed the Supreme Court that it favours the entry of females of all age groups.
Women in the age group of 10-50 are banned from entering the temple. The Sabarimala temple trust has defended the temple entry restriction in the name of tradition till now.
Earlier, the LDF government had said that its stand was similar to the previous Congress-led government stand which said that women shouldn't be allowed to enter the temple premises.
The temple trust too had maintained that it supports entry restriction in the name of tradition but the activists have always opposed the restrictions and termed it "DISCRIMINATORY."
Reacting to the news, Bhumata Brigade president and one of the activists at the forefront of the right to pray campaign Trupti Desai welcomed Kerala government's decision.
Ayyappa Dharma Sena president Rahul Easwar, however, said they will oppose the decision tooth and nail.
The famous three-month long 'mandala pooja' and 'makaravilakku' pilgrimage season at Lord Ayyappa temple in the hill shrine of Sabarimala will begin on November 15.
