New Delhi: Sania Mirza made a winning start to the 2007 WTA season when she beat fourth seed Maria Kirilenko in the first round of the Hobart International on Monday.
Sania beat her Russian opponent who is ranked 29th in the world in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to enter the second round. She faces Italian Romina Oprandi who upset another Russian Elena Likhovtseva 7-6, 6-1 in the first round.
Sania is also participating in the doubles event where she teams up with Australian Alicia Molik.
With the win, Sania has also moved up in the world charts to 65th, bettering her season-ending ranking of 66 by one place.
The event is Sania's first before the Australian Open kickstarts on January 15.
