New Delhi: French President Nicolas Sarkozy's private life continues to remain in public glare.

In the latest incident, the president has sued a website for 'falsification' after a write-up on the site claimed that Sarkozy had offered to call off his wedding with Carla Bruni, if his ex-wife Cecilia came back to him.

This is the first time a serving president lodged a complaint against a media organisation.

According to the post, Sarkozy sent the text message to Cecilia a week before his marriage to Bruni. Prosecutors said the case had been referred to the judicial police in the French capital, six days after Sarkozy tied the knot with the Italian-born former supermodel turned singer-songwriter. In a posting Wednesday headlined -- run by the left-leaning Nouvel Observateur magazine -- said Sarkozy had written to Cecilia eight days before marrying Bruni. "If you come back, I'll call it all off," he was reported to have told his ex-wife Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz.

Sarkozy's lawyer said that the maximum penalty in the case is three years in prison and a fine of more than $50,000.

The courts could also order that the source of the story be revealed.
