New Delhi: Supreme Court on Monday upheld the conviction of Vishal Yadav, Vikas Yadav and Sukhdev Pehlwan in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case. The judge took a serious view of the case and took a full day to take the final decision. The quantum of punishment is yet to be decided.
Delhi High Court in 2014 had enhanced the sentence from life imprisonment to 25 years in jail without remission.
Nitish's mother, Neelam Katara had approached the Supreme Court earlier this year asking for a death penalty for the convicts.
Vikas, Vishal and Sukhdev Pehalwan are serving the jail term for abducting and killing Nitish, a business executive and son of an IAS officer, on the intervening night of February 16-17, 2002. They did not approve of the victim's affair with Bharti, sister of Vikas.
Katara was abducted and killed by Vikas, his cousin Vishal and Pehalwan as they did not approve of the victim's affair with Bharti as they belonged to different castes, the court had said.
