Thane: A local court has sentenced seven Bangladeshi women to nine months imprisonment for staying in Thane district without passport.
Thane Principal District Judge RR Gandhi recently held the seven women guilty under sections 3(1) and 3(2)(a) of The Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920, and awarded them nine-month imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1,000 each.
The accused, who worked as maid servants and did other petty jobs in Mira Road area, were arrested by the district rural police seven months back.
The judge, in his order, also directed the officer in-charge of Kashimira police station to take steps to deport the accused women to their native country on the expiry of period of the sentence.
Besides the seven women, another minor girl was also found guilty of the offence and the judge ordered that the copy of this judgement be sent to the Juvenile Justice Board at Bhiwandi for necessary disposal of the case against her.
The seven women convicted for the offence are - Mumtaz Asraf Mandal, Munira Siraj Kazi, Amina Habivar Lashkar, Umida Shubhnath Yadav, Lakhi Hekmat Shaikh, Imamul Jabdul Shaikh and Alamin Gulam Shaikh.
