BANGALORE: Silk sarees seem to be a favourite not just among Indian women, but also for women from across the globe. The Silk Mark Expo 2011 was inaugurated by cine artist Ragini Dwivedi here at Palace Grounds on Wednesday.Miho Sakata Malhan, a freelance Japanese writer, who was at the Expo trying out silk sarees said, “I like wearing silk sarees. I am married to an Indian and we reside in Bangalore. I have a total collection of about 35 varieties of silk sarees.”Besides silk sarees from Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Shantiniketan (West Bengal), Tripura, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka,  artisans from Ujjain are displaying the art of silk painting. Also, silk production process, right from silkworm egg rearing to a fully grown larvae, silk extraction, weaving and the final silk production is being displayed at the ‘theme pavillion’ stall, at the exhibition.  “We intend to create awareness and opportunity for weavers, silk producers, as well as consumers to meet on a common platform and benefit them without the interference of middlemen.  Silk rearing is mainly practiced in the semi-urban, rural areas but the consumers are mainly urban,” said K S Menon, chief executive, Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI).The Silk Mark Expo 2011, will be held till Dec 19.
