Redevelopment project near the building could have caused it to fall.

Mumbai: Tragedy struck Mumbai's busy Crawford market area in south Mumbai early Wednesday morning, when a building collapsed, killing 4 adults and 2 children of a family.

Six members of a family were killed as part of the nearly 100-year-old Syed building collapsed early Wednesday morning.

Residents allege that digging for the foundation laying of a redevelopment project nearby weakened the already aging structure of the building.

Syed Farhan, the victims’ family says, "Piling should be done only after leaving a gap of 15 meters, but they were doing it very close by."

The building is located in the congested Crawford market area which made it difficult for the rescue workers to carry out their operations.

Angry residents also mobbed officials visiting the site and demanded answers from the administration.

Every year several buildings collapse in the B and C wards of Mumbai and instead of coming up with a concrete plan for safeguarding these buildings, the Bombay Muncipal Corporation (BMC) and Maharashtra Housing Area and Development Authority (MHADA) indulge in a blame game.

In fact, the BMC commissioner has already passed on the inquiry to another department.

BMC commissioner Jairaj Phatak says, "Officials of the building permission department will come and see if any rules were flouted during the piling operations."

Meanwhile, relatives of those killed have demanded strict action against the builder of the new construction.
