Vocational Higher Secondary School, Irumpanam, observed Software Freedom Day 2012 on Thursday.
I B Manoj of Free Learning Institute, Edappally, inaugurated the event, which was attended by school manager M I Pauli, principal V A Thampi, senior assistant Valsa K Paulose and IT Coordinator Thomas Yoyaku.
In his introductory speech, Sidharth K Bhattathiri, a Class X student and convenor of Swathanthra Software Koottayma (SSK) VHSS Irimpanam, spoke about the freedom and relevance of Free Software in society.
This include the freedom to run the programme for any purpose, freedom to study how the programme works and adapt it to your needs, freedom to redistribute copies and freedom to improve the programme and release improvements to the public.
Mathew K Vaidyan, SSK member and Class X student, administered the pledge in assembly to the 800 students.
In his inaugural speech, I B Manoj spoke about the stability of free software when compared to proprietary software. Free software is more user-friendly.
It is not infected by viruses and spywares. Nowadays educational institutions and companies are switching to free software.

He further said that representation of girls are comparatively less in the field of hardware and software.
