BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation is studying the pros and cons regarding a special rebate to Karnataka tourists who wish to travel in The Golden Chariot. The matter will be discussed in the board meeting before taking a final call as three agencies - Indian Railways, state and Union governments - are involved in this project, noted a senior official of KSTDC, on conditions of anonymity. The Golden Chariot on lines of Palace On Wheels was introduced in 2008 with a view to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Karnataka to both foreign and Indian tourists. This has been patronised well by foreign tourists who book in advance to travel in the chariot to explore Karnataka. Tariff for an Indian tourist is Rs 20,000 for a night and Rs 1,40,000 for a seven day package. For a foreign tourist, it is $685 per night and $4,795 for seven days. The tariff for Southern Splendour package for an Indian traveller is Rs 24,000 per night and Rs 1,68,000 for seven days. The tariff comes down if the booking is for three people. The official admitted that the occupancy has been just 30-40 per cent at present due to recession in the western world. The chariot comprises 18 coaches: 11 passengers coaches, two restaurants, one bar, one health club, two power cars and one coach for staff. There are four cabins and a lounge in each coach. Passenger capacity of the chariot is 88. The KSTDC blocks the booking if it feels the booking is less than 10 per cent. “We can not operate the 18 coaches chariot just for 10 to 12 passengers due to cost factor. We will incur heavy loss if we do so,” the official noted. To improve occupancy and enable Karnataka tourists to travel in this luxury heritage train, the KSTDC is considering to offer a good rebate for such tourists. A detailed study will be done before taking any decision. “We are optimistic of attracting more number of tourists and also achieving 80-90 per cent booking if special rates are offered for our tourists.
