Student stages kidnap drama to trick dad, repay debts

To repay the loan he had borrowed from his friends, to make quick money through online trading, a 19-year-old college student staged a kidnap drama. Knowing that his father had `3 lakh in his possession, Aravind staged the drama to walk away with the money. However, his drama came to an end after the Vaniyambadi police caught him.

Aravind, a third year BSc computer science student of a private college in Tirupattur, had left his house in Kalandra in Vaniyambadi at about 4 pm on Thursday. He did not return for several hours when Aravind’s father Ramesh, a farmer, received a phone call from his number. The caller said that they had kidnapped his son for a ransom of `3 lakh. They threatened Ramesh that he would not see his son alive, if he failed to deposit the cash in Aravind’s bank account. The next day, Ramesh deposited the amount and lodged a complaint at the Vaniyambadi taluk police.

The police, tracked the signal of the phone call “The first call was from Erode. We found that the boy had spoken like the kidnapper using the voice modulation option on his mobile phone and had fooled his father,” said a police officer.

The boy had borrowed around `60,000 from his friends to invest in a Bangalore-based company but he was later duped. “The boy asked his father to give him the money to pay his friends, but he had refused. So, he decided to stage the drama.
