Systems crash blinds Delhi airport for 2 hrs
The radar systems at the ATC collapsed between 1745 hrs IST and 1845 hrs IST.

New Delhi: All flight operations at the IGI Airport in Delhi were severely affected on Thursday evening following a systems crash at the Air Traffic Controller.

The entire radar systems at the ATC collapsed between 1745 hrs IST and 1845 hrs IST.

No takeoffs or landings could take place for more than two hours following the systems crash. The back up system also failed.

The ATC system was finally restored at around 2030 hrs IST.

Sources told CNN-IBN that after the systems crash airspace was reduced to 1/8th of its maximum capacity.

ATC was finding it very difficult to find out the location of aircraft after the systems crash. From Udhampur to Khajuraho, Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the west to Lucknow, the entire airspace had become a blind spot.

The software installed in the ATC Radar had become corrupt. The ATC restarted and reloaded the system with the entire procedure taking about three hours.

The radar system collapse led to massive delays. Sources told CNN-IBN that when the radar was available standard separation between two aircraft was 10 miles but that had to be increased to 80 miles.
