Colombo: The Indian cricket team's practice match with Sri Lanka A on Monday was washed out after heavy rains made the ground at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) unplayable.

Even the opening match of the Unitech Cup triangular series, between Sri Lanka and South Africa, looks doomed.

The venue, R Premadasa Stadium, wore a soggy look on Sunday and it was highly unlikely that the ground would dry up sufficiently in time for the day-night affair Monday.

However, there is a reserve day for each of the seven matches of the tournament.

It was the second successive day that India's practice match against the same opponents was washed out.

The Indians, who play their first triangular series match against Sri Lanka on Wednesday, resorted to a centre pitch net session on Sunday at the Police Ground.

"The practice match has been cancelled, and the players are working out in the hotel gymnasium," team manager Sanjay Jagdale said.

The net session also looked highly unlikely as rains continued to lash the city on Monday morning, with dark clouds giving little hope for play.

"We will go to go the SSC ground for net practice in the afternoon if the weather clears," he said.
