KOCHI: The pre-monsoon cleaning of Thevara-Perandoor Canal has begun. It aims at ensuring free flow of water through the city and avoiding problems of waterlogging. The Gokulam to Pottakuzhi canal stretch was cleaned off ‘pola’ (plants and weeds) and solid waste on Monday. KMRL is expected to finish the work in about 45 days.According to the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) officials, the authority has taken up the cleaning process and has entrusted it with Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC). Eight teams have been engaged for the drive.The 10-kilometre-long canal, beginning from near PVS Hospital in Kaloor to Thevara where it joins the Vembanad lake, will be cleaned and de-silted. The process of cleaning the canal includes removal of pola, waste dumped in the water body and cleaning/de-silting of the canal up to one-metre depth. The KSINC will carry out the work using both mechanised and manual processes. KMRL took up the drive after Chief Minister Oommen Chandy instructed it to undertake the work as per the request by Mayor Tony Chammany. The expected cost for the cleaning is estimated at Rs 1.5 crore.
