Have you ever wondered how dragon fruits are cultivated? And did you know it could even turn into a profitable business? Local18 reports about a woman from the state of Andhra Pradesh, who started a dragon fruit business during the COVID pandemic, through which several others were able to get an employment opportunity.
The woman named Lavanya has worked in several fields in the past 30 years. When the coronavirus outbreak hit, she decided to relocate to her native village of Parumanchala, in the Nandikotkur constituency, the district of Nandyal. She used to live in Dubai, where she spent 30 years, working in various businesses. So, when her business was booming, the pandemic hit, forcing her to leave the place and return to India, to her hometown.
Here, she decided to delve into the business of cultivation. According to the plan, it was decided that the cultivation would be done on 4 acres of land. So, the said land portion was bought and the dragon fruit cultivation was started. Lavanya took the help of other farmers, and learned through observing them, how they carried out the cultivation of the fruit. She is involved in the cutting of the fruit, which is then sent to the market.
As per Local18, the cost of the 4-acre land was Rs 50 lakh. According to Lavanya, it was a “continuous crop” and the initial expenditure was expected per year. Then, it will become easier to gain profit through this crop.
The consumption of dragon fruit is increasing rapidly, added the businesswoman. The traders come to buy directly from the cultivation, which is done organically. The market price of the fruit per kg is Rs 150 and higher profits are also possible. Lavanya’s venture has employed over 10 people.
