MADURAI: Krishnan (76), the secretary and warden of a government-aided school, who was arrested by police on Monday on charges of sexually harassing girl students, died early on Tuesday. Police claimed that he complained of chest pain at the Central Prison where he was lodged, and died en route the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH).However, his family members alleged that the police had framed false charges against Krishnan and did not inform them about the arrest or his death. “He had been working as the secretary of the school for over 10 years and had no bad remarks against him,” said Krishnan’s son Raveendran. “We learnt about our father’s arrest last night. The police did not inform us about his arrest or death,” said Krishnan’s daughter Indira. She added that though the family was living near the school, the police did not inform them deliberately. The police should initiate fresh investigations and the culprits should be punished. Two qualified government doctors should perform the autopsy and the entire process should be video-recorded, demanded Dhavamani, Krishnan’s son-in-law.Meanwhile, Duraipandi, the headmaster of the school, said that Krishnan was a dignified man who was committed to his work. A teacher of the school alleged that Krishnan was booked on false charges due to “some internal politics”. Though Krishnan served as secretary of the school for three consecutive terms, Collector U Sagayam, the chairman of the school, acknowledging his service by appointing him for the fourth time, said Raveendran, the son of the deceased. Krishnan was a disciplined man, who retired as personal assistant to the Tirunelveli Collector in 1998, he added. But, Tallakulam police inspector Jeyakumar said, ”We intimated the family about the arrest on Monday morning itself. We filed a case under the TN Women Harassment Act based on a complaint from five students.”
