TN: Madras HC defers vote counting
AIADMK filed a petition in HC by seeking a stay on counting due to violence and booth capturing during polls.

Tamil Nadu: Counting of votes for the Chennai Corporation elections in Tamil Nadu, which were supposed to begin on Thursday amid tight security arrangements have been deferred till October 20.

There will be repolling in 27 polling booths in Chennai on October 20. Due to various reasons, repolling was held in 90 polling booths earlier too.

Chennai witnessed large scale violence and incidents of booth capturing during the polls and a petition was filed in the Madras High Court by the Opposition AIADMK, seeking a stay on the counting.

The High Court passed an interim order on Wednesday stating that the counting of the Chennai Corporation elections be postponed till October 20.

The results are subject to a final court order and if the court decides to cancel the election, then the elected representatives will just have to forfeit their seats.

The State Election Commission had offered to submit a list of sensitive wards to the Madras High Court. It had also offerred to repoll in these wards. The Election Commission is expected to submit this list on Wednesday.

However, the elections were two-phased local body elections and the counting of votes for the Madurai and Tiruchirapalli Corporations' elections have already begun.

Polling was 71.53 per cent being held for 1,30,962 posts, including 1,17,302 in rural bodies and nearly four lakh candidates in the fray.

The State Election Commission had announced that it would soon issue notification on the indirect election of Corporation Mayors, Deputy Mayors and Municipality Chairpersons to be held on October 28.
