TRAI deadline for digtised TV ends today
All those with cable connections may face a blackout after Tuesday.

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) deadline for switching to digitised TV ends on Tuesday. All those with cable connections may face a blackout after Tuesday. Cable operators were supposed to file customer details and their choice of television channels with the TRAI board by Tuesday. However, cable operators have sought an extension from the government.

Digitisation of the cable services in the entire country by December 2014 was one of the tasks that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry had set for itself and the first step towards achieving this goal was its implementation in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai by June 30, 2012. Installing set-top boxes (STBs) in each cable viewing household is a precondition for digitisation.

While in some cities installation of STBs was less than desired, official sources had said that they expected the figure to improve as it was observed during the first phase of digitisation. Following the implementation of the second phase of digitisation, the I&B Ministry would now focus on the third phase.

The third phase of digitisation has to be implemented in all other urban areas (municipal corporations/ municipalities) except cities or towns or areas included in the Phase I and II by September 30, 2014. Under Phase IV, the digitisation process will cover rest of the country by end of 2014.
