The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested an individual linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
TMC youth leader Ashish Pandey has been accused of assisting Dr. Sandip Kumar Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college, who has also been arrested in the same case. With this fresh arrest, a total of five people have been apprehended in connection with the case.
According to officials, Pandey was close to Ghosh and helped him carry out financial irregularities at the institution. He was under the CBI’s scanner and was questioned for several hours by the central agency last month.
Pandey is also a staff member at RG Kar Medical College, where a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and killed on duty in August.
Ghosh was arrested in the corruption case on September 2. Later, the agency took him into custody regarding the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor at the medical college.
In its FIR, registered under the direction of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI has charged Ghosh and three Kolkata-based private entities: Ma Tara Traders of Madhya Jhorehat, Banipur, Howrah; Eshan Cafe of 4/1 Belgachia; and Khama Louha. The premises of all these entities named in the FIR were searched during the operation.
The agency has filed the FIR against Ghosh and the private entities under sections 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
