PUDUCHERRY: The police, on Tuesday night, arrested a notorious burglar while he was trying to escape after committing a robbery at a house in Raja Nagar, Orleanpet. Police said that Dhanasegar (20) had earlier escaped from the custody of the Tamil Nadu police while being taken to court in connection with a case in Thanjavur. Senior Superintendent of Police V J Chandran told reporters on Wednesday that Dhanasegar had gained entry into the house of Raja, where he stole Rs 12,500 and two cellphones. On hearing some noise, Raja woke up and tried to catch him, but Dhanasegar managed to escape. However, Raja and four of his neighbours gave him a chase and finally caught him with the help of police personnel on patrol duty. The police recovered the cash and cellphones from him.Upon interrogation, Dhanasegar admitted that he had stolen a motorcycle from Raja’s house, for which a complaint had been registered. The accused also confessed to stealing seven cellphones from another house in Raja Nagar, two bikes from Orleanpet and gold jewellery worth Rs 75,000. The police also recovered stolen properties worth Rs 1,75,000 from him. Senior Superintendent of Police V J Chandran, who complimented the police personnel who caught the accused, said that personnel from the Tamil Nadu police would arrive to question the accused.
