Mangalore/Karwar: Two foreign ships were stranded due to rough weather off the coast of Mangalore and Karwar in Karnataka on Saturday, with efforts underway to rescue 10 crew members of one of the vessels.
A Hong Kong registered vessel "Asian Forest" carrying iron ore fines to China tilted about 28 degrees near Tannirbavi, about six nautical miles from South of the Fairway Buoy of New Mangalore port.
Thirteen of its crew members jumped out and sailed to Ullal in a boat, while five swam ashore with the aid of safety jackets to Mangalore, Coast Guard official Mohanty told PTI in Mangalore.
Efforts by Coast Guard, which rushed tugs to arrest further tilting of the ship came to nought due to rough weather conditions and forced them to call off the operations.
While the 13 crew have been admitted to Justice K S Hegde Hospital in Ullal for treatment, the remaining are being treated at the Port Hospital in Mangalore.
The ship came to New Mangalore Port Trust about 10 days ago and has been anchored there since then.
In the second incident, an empty commercial ship travelling from Malaysia to Dubai with 10 crew members -- six Indians, three Iranians and a Siberian, - ran aground off Karwar coast due to stiff winds.
Efforts were on to rescue the crew members, a Karwar port official said.
The vessel M B Shaheen, is owned by Five Flower Trading Company of Obalali state of Dubai, sources said.
Meanwhile, a naval helicopter from Goa conducted an aerial survey and returned to its base, they said.
