Bhopal: Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti on Tuesday began a hunger strike, demanding the removal of a police official in Bada Malhera after her convoy was attacked in Shahora village on Monday.
"The attack on my convoy was a part of a larger conspiracy hatched at the behest of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to kill me," she said.
Uma Bharti, who quit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after being denied the post of the chief minister for the second time last November, has launched her own Bhartiya Janshakti Party (BJPS).
A crowd allegedly threw stones at her vehicle in Shahora where she had come protest what she termed as booth capturing during the by-poll to the Bada Malhera assembly seat - vacated by her.
BJP supporters, however, say their leader Shankar Pratap Singh alias Halke Raja was allegedly slapped by Uma Bharti's security guard, angering some villagers.
In the ensuing violence, Uma Bharti's driver was injured and 15 vehicles were reportedly damaged by Raja's supporters.
Uma Bharti ran for cover and took shelter in a temple where she later launched her sit-in demonstration to demand action against the culprits and Police Superintendent Chanchal Shekhar.
Around midnight, she shifted to Bada Malehra where she resumed her sit-in protest in front of the police station on Tuesday morning.
Police, meanwhile, said the situation was under control. "Action is being taken on the basis of complaints from both sides," said Inspector General of Police (Sagar Range) Swarn Singh.
