KOLLAM: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has criticised the Central Government’s decision to open up the pension sector to  multinational companies. Inaugurating the State Circle Conference of the Income Tax Employees Federation at Bharatha Rajni Parish Hall here on Thursday, he said that such decisions aiding corporates were kept at bay during the first term of UPA Government, following protests from by the Left parties. He said that such wrong policies would have negative implications for the employees and public in general and should be opposed. The government was permitting big companies to increase the prices of petroleum prices and fertilizers at their will, he said, pointing out that the widespread protest raised in states like Kerala has prompted the oil companies to slash the petrol prices slightly. The soaring prices of chemical fertilisers had pushed the farmers to a debt crisis. At a time when the Prime Minister is making  claims that price rise is integral part of of development process, Achuthanandan  asked whether the Central Government would claim that suicide of farmers and poverty are a result of development. Referring to the Parliament march of the Central Government employees on November 25, Achuthanandan said that it was aimed at voicing   strong disapproval about the soaring number of contract appointments in Income Tax and other departments. The Central Government was now reluctant in making permanent appointments to such departments. Federation’s Kerala Circle president N K Appukkuttan presided over the function.  P K Gurudasan MLA and A A Aziz MLA spoke.
