CHENNAI: To ensure safe shopping this Deepavali, the Greater Chennai City Police opened a police outpost on Ranganathan street-Usman Road junction in T Nagar on Saturday. Besides deploying around 350 police personnel, 16 surveillance cameras and six watch towers have been put up at various locations in the shopping hub.Police said the outpost will monitor the crowd through the surveillance cameras connected to monitors in the offices of the assistant commissioner of police and deputy commissioner.  A VHF set and Simplex Channel have been placed in the outpost for the communication needs of the personnel on duty.Police sources said four assistant commissioners, 12 police inspectors, 80 sub-inspectors, 206 policemen, led by assistant commissioner of T Nagar G Tamilselvan and supervised by Deputy Commissioner of T Nagar district M Ashok Kumar, will work to ensure safety in the area.  Watch towers have been put up on the Madley Road-Burkit Road junction, Mambalam railway station at Ranganathan Street, Pinjala Subramaniam Street, Usman Road-Duraisamy Subway junction and Thyagaraya Road.  Trained policemen will monitor the place using binoculars from the new flyover.To immediately attend to accidents, if any, fire tenders have been stationed at two locations — the North Usman Road near Panagal Park and in front of the Mambalam railway station.
