London: The US suffered their worst singles showing at Wimbledon for 95 years following the defeat of Shenay Perry in the fourth round on Monday.
The last time no American reached the singles quarter-finals at the All England Club was in 1911 when none of the three US men who entered advanced beyond the third round and there were no American women in the draw.
On Monday the unseeded Perry succumbed 6-2 6-0 to Russian seventh seed Elena Dementieva.
Her higher-ranked and better known compatriots, 2005 champion Venus Williams, last year's men's runner-up Andy Roddick, 1992 champion Andre Agassi and James Blake all lost in the third round.
Twice champion Serena Williams and 1999 winner Lindsay Davenport were absent because of injury.
Top seeds this year are Swiss three-times defending champion Roger Federer and Amelie Mauresmo of France, underlining the depth in European tennis.
Venus Williams, at six, was the only American seed in the women's draw with nine of the top 10 from Europe while Roddick at three was the highest men's seed, with James Blake at number eight.
