An Anglo French Textile (AFT) mill worker was killed in a country-made bomb attack here on Saturday. Police said a motorcycle-borne assailant hurled the bomb at Sivaraman (52) when he was feeding his dog around 9.30 pm on Saturday in the compound of his home in Lakshmi Nagar. He was immediately rushed to the Government General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 1 am on Sunday.
Police suspect the involvement of Sivaraman’s neighbour Manigandan, a driver by profession, with whom he got into frequent fights. Manigandan had complained several times about the noise generated by the construction work being undertaken at the former’s house.
The two almost got into a physical fight a few months ago. Other neighbours had to intervene and separate them. Tired of Manigandan’s complaints, Sivaraman approached the former’s landlord and convinced him to evict Manigandan who had already vacated the house before the attack, police said.
When asked about Manigandan’s alleged links with rowdy Karuna, rival of murdered gangster Jegan, Superintendent of Police Bairavasamy said they were probing all angles and would book the culprits soon. He added that Manigandan does not have any criminal record. Meanwhile, searches for explosives were conducted at Kuamaragurapallam and Thiruvalluvar Nagar.
The police came under much criticism following the death of gangster Jegan in another country-made bomb attack, while he was being taken back to the Karaikal Jail in a police van after a court visit.
