Kolkata: At least 16 people have been killed and over 70 others injured after an under-construction bridge collapsed in Kolkata’s northern part on Thursday. Several people have been rescued so far but there are still many trapped under the debris, say officials involved in the rescue and relief work.
Rescue operations are on in full swing. Firefighters and residents are trying with their bare hands to rescue those trapped under the wreckage of the metal-and-cement structure that came down near Girish Park in a teeming commercial district. The bridge almost snapped into two.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was in Purulia for an election campaign, is returning to the city to take stock of the situation.
The incident took place near Ganesh Talkies in Girish Park. It is a crowded area in North Kolkata, which houses many commercial as well as residential buildings.
“The bridge collapsed before my eyes. We heard a huge commotion after the collapse. Several people, autos are taxis are buried under the debris,” an eyewitness said.
The bridge was due to be completed in 2010 and has missed 8 deadlines as yet. The next deadline for completion of the construction is in December 2016.
The flyover, named after Vivekananda, was one of the pet projects of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she came to power in 2011.
