After years of glamorous women's wear, designer duo Falguni Shane Peacock decided to debut their menswear collection at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2018. But with a twist. The men-fashion oriented show was opened by Sonakshi Sinha, a female Bollywood actor."The show had to start with a woman and she had to wear a suit," says Shane of the designer duo post the jazzy presentation.
He shares that while the planning to design a menswear collection has been underway for years, things actually panned out only in the last two weeks. "Before we could decide on a collection and what the look is going to be, we had decided it was only Karan Johar. I said let's pitch to Karan, if he says no, we'd change the line," he adds while speaking about the actual show-stopper of the night.
While Sonakshi opened the show in a black embroidered jacket with, Karan walked, sporting two jackets one after the other, and completed his look with silver hair. Titled Louche, the collection was inspired by the shiny era of 70s and constituted colour pallet of grey, blingy black and dark blue and had ranged from sequined jackets, embellishments on the bombers and 3-piece suits.
KJo, who sported silver hair and strutted with sheer aplomb, said that the show felt like a 10-minute party. "When the ramp is converted into a party zone, that's when you enjoy the show even more. I'm half Sindhi, so bling goes with my territory. Men should never shy away from shining, because it's there way of expressing their innocent soul."
On being asked why the number of designers experimenting with menswear is limited in the Indian fashion industry, Falguni says it's because menswear is limited. "About 5 years back, men did not want to experiment that much, everyone just wanted to wear a well-tailored suit and that's what it was. But now, with the way the embellishments and details are happening, there's a silver lining to it- which is making it interesting for the designers to get into it," she says.
Falguni added that it's also because can wear what they want to. "You can't expect a guy to wear women's clothes, but a girl can wear men's suits. So there's so much more you can do with women. But the whole feel around the world is such that men have started experimenting, starting putting patches on their clothes, they want to do kaaftaans, they want to do bombers, wear shorts. It's not just a plain suit anymore," she explains.
She further adds that men are now upping their game, courtesy Bollywood. "If you look at Ranveer Singh, I don't think anyone has dared to do that. But now men are upping their games, they want more than a well-tailored suit. Which is what is exciting for us," she said.
