Should We Keep Ceiling Fan On While Using AC? Let’s Find Out
There is a common misconception that ceiling fans should be switched off, while using AC.

The summer season is just around the corner. People have already started using fans. There are some who are even using ACs to beat the scorching heat. As everything is easily accessible nowadays, people are using ACs more and more these days. Most urban households have air conditioning now, and they are able to use it in one go. A lot of people use both ACs and ceiling fans together. There is a common misconception that ceiling fans should be switched off, while using air conditioning. People believe that using fans and ACs together will throw away all the cool air outside the room. Today, let’s bust this misconception.

When we feel hot, anyone’s first reaction is to turn the AC on. A ceiling fan used along with the air conditioner can make the room feel comfortable faster and also help reduce the overall electricity bill. Let us explain how. The normal temperature of the human body is around 37 degrees Celsius. During summers, when the temperature of the surroundings increases, the body cools itself, either through sweating or by releasing water through evaporation in the surroundings. But this only works when the humidity levels are low. As soon as humidity increases, sweating does not work, making us feel uncomfortable and sick. This is because the air already has enough moisture and is slow or unable to absorb any more water than our body is releasing. Here, the fans can help. Although a fan does not cool its surroundings, the draft of air that it pushes can help remove hot air from the skin and aid in the evaporation of sweat, making the body feel comfortable.

In a similar way, using a fan along with AC will help remove the hot air from the room and can cool the environment quickly because of the air from the AC. The only trick is to set the temperature of the AC at 26 degrees Celsius. This will provide the same cooling effect as an AC, which is set at 22 degrees Celsius, without the interference of a fan.

Apart from that, using fans with AC can also save up to 12–20 percent on electricity bills.

What's your reaction?
