Gangai Amaran is the younger brother of musical maestro and Padma Vibhushan award-winner, Ilaiyaraaja.

Gangai Amaran is a multi-hyphenated star, who is a composer, playback singer, lyricist, actor, film director and screenwriter in Tamil films. He is the younger brother of musical maestro and Padma Vibhushan award-winner, Ilaiyaraaja. Gangai Amaran has delivered many hit films, music and some evergreen iconic songs which Tamil audiences still hum to. His songs continue to receive much love even today. Recently, fans loved the song Spark from Thalapathy Vijay’s latest release, The Greatest Of All Time, aka, The Goat, which was penned by Gangai Amaran. En Iniya Pon Nilaave

This song is from the 1980 film, Moodu Pani. It is a psychological thriller film written, directed and filmed by Balu Mahendra. The music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, and the song was penned by Gangai Amaran. It was sung by KJ Yesudas.

Mannil Indha Kaadhal

Keladi Kannmanii, a romantic drama, was released in 1990 and marked the directorial debut of Vasanth. It featured this famous song sung by SP Balasubrahmanyam. The director wanted to showcase the singing prowess of the singer in a scene. The music was once again given by Gangai Amaran’s brother, Ilaiyaraaja. On paper, Pavalar Varadharajan has been credited as the lyricist. He was the brother of the music composer but had already passed away. In reality, Gangai Amaran used his brother’s name to honour his memory.

Kaatril Enthan

Gangai Amaran has also written several hit songs for superstar Rajinikanth. He has penned Kaatri Enthan from the film Johnny. He has also written songs Aasaiye Kaathule, Senorita, I Love You and Oru Iniya Manathu.

Hey Maina

Maaveeran is a remake of the 1985 Hindi film Mard. One of the songs, Hey Maina was sung by Malaysia Vasudevan and KS Chithra and penned by Gangai Amaran. He also wrote the song Sokku Podi, crooned by the same singers and Vaangada Vaanga sung by Malaysia Vasudevan.

Thiruvallikeni Rani

This song featured in the 2004 action thriller, Udhaya, directed by Azhagam Perumal. The film stars Vijay and Simran, while Vivek, Nassar and Rajesh play supporting roles. The song is penned by Gangai Amaran and sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Karthik.
