SA Chandrasekar, renowned filmmaker and father of Thalapathy Vijay, expressed concerns about Tamil cinema’s current state, highlighting a growing emphasis on star power over substantial content.
SA Chandrasekar shared his reservations at a pre-release event for director Ezhil’s upcoming film, Desingu Raja 2. He critiqued Vijay’s recent hit, Leo. With a filmmaking career spanning 70 South Indian movies, the filmmaker, who introduced Vijay as a child actor in the 1984 film Vetri, highlights a diminishing focus on compelling screenplays for both directors and audiences.
Director SA Chandrasekar spoke at the audio launch of director Ezhil’s Desinghu Raja 2, featuring Vemal in the lead role. Chandrasekar emphasised the importance of a director’s openness to criticism for sustained success in the industry. He illustrated his point by sharing a phone conversation with a director, highlighting the challenges some new-gen filmmakers encounter in receiving constructive feedback.
In a recent discussion, he shared an incident, stating, “I got to preview the first copy of a film before its release. The director thanked me when I praised the film. But as soon as I started pointing out issues, the director ended the call, saying he was about to eat and promised to call back later. Regrettably, he never did.”
He mentioned discovering scenes in the film depicting a conflict between a father and a son. “I advised him that such scenarios don’t ring true and wouldn’t resonate. Interestingly, after release, those very scenes received criticism from both fans and critics.”
Fans noticed similarities between the film Chandrasekar mentioned and Vijay’s Leo. In Leo, the hero’s father sacrifices his daughter due to superstitious beliefs, causing a conflict. Leo faced criticism, especially for its second half. Chandrasekar’s speech has now gone viral among fans.
It’s noteworthy that SA Chandrasekar and Vijay have experienced strained relations. Earlier, Chandrasekar announced a political party in Vijay’s name, prompting the actor to file a case against his father. But there seemed to be an improvement in their relationship, as Chandrasekar was invited to participate in Varisu’s audio launch.
In the meantime, Vijay is currently on the set of his upcoming film with Venkat Prabhu, titled Greatest of All Time. The movie includes significant roles played by Prabhu Deva, Prashanth, Laila, Sneha, Meenakshi Chaudhry and Mohan.
