Fans of Grey’s Anatomy have reason to rejoice as Ellen Pompeo is set to return as Meredith Grey in Season 21 at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Despite exiting the hit TV drama more than a year ago, it seems like she’s not done with the series yet. Deadline recently revealed that Meredith will appear in more episodes than fans might have expected. While viewers have seen Meredith make occasional appearances and heard her narrate every episode, reports suggest she is set to feature in at least seven episodes of the upcoming season, which begins on September 26. Interestingly, there is a possibility that her appearances might extend as the season progresses.
In Season 19, Meredith appeared in eight episodes and in Season 20, she was seen in four episodes before returning for the two part finale. Her reduced presence on the show was partly due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. Another reason was that she came onboard to produce and star in Hulu’s limited series Natalia in 2022.
Last year, Ellen Pompeo hinted about returning to Grey’s Anatomy, when she mentioned that her departure was “not a complete goodbye.” In a conversation with Variety, the actress said, “I’m not completely gone. Actually, the storyline is very cool. There’s a lot of real research that’s changing very rapidly about Alzheimer’s disease and about what they believe is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s pretty controversial. So Meredith’s character left to go to Boston because her daughter needed to go to a special school. I will be making some appearances hopefully next year, if I can find some time. It’s not a complete goodbye and I think we’ve got an interesting story to tell.”
Ellen Pompeo’s return is leaving fans excited, but the show will bid farewell to some familiar faces. Jake Borelli, who plays Levi Schmitt and Midori Francis’s Mika Yasuda, will conclude their part in Season 21. On the other hand, Jason Winston George is coming back as Benjamin Warren following the end of spinoff series Station 19.
Grey’s Anatomy’s season 21 will also feature Chandra Wilson, James Pickens, Jr, Kevin McKidd, Kevin McKidd, Camilla Luddington, Caterina Scorsone, Chris Carmack, Harry Shum Jr, Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd and Niko Terho, among others. However, due to budget reduction, not every character will appear in each episode.
