The trailer of Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light is out before Cannes 2024 competitive run.

Payal Kapadia’s debut feature film, ‘All We Imagine As Light,’ recently unveiled its trailer. The film has secured a coveted spot in the competition lineup of the 7th Cannes Film Festival, set to occur later this month.

Making history as the first Indian entry in Cannes’ competitive section since 1994, “All We Imagine As Light” stands as one of only four female-directed movies among this year’s selections.

The trailer, launched on Wednesday, offers a glimpse into the narrative of two nurses navigating life in Mumbai. Prabha’s routine is disrupted by an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, while her roommate Anu grapples with finding privacy in the bustling city for intimate moments with her boyfriend. A retreat to a picturesque seaside town presents an opportunity for them to pursue their desires.

Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon in pivotal roles, Kapadia’s creation is among the 19 films slated for screening in Cannes’ competitive category. Noteworthy entries include Ali Abbasi’s ‘The Apprentice,’ Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis,’ and Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘Kind of Kindness.’

The Cannes Film Festival 2024 is scheduled to run from May 14 to 25. Iris Knobloch, president of the Cannes Festival, and Thierry Fremaux, General Delegate, announced the official selection line-up for the 2024 edition of the gala at a press conference streamed live from Cannes, France.

Besides Kapadia, British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri’s ‘Santosh’ will also be showcased at the 77th edition of the film gala. The movie will be screened under the Un Certain Regard section.

Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine As Light’ will be presented under the main segment alongside 19 other highly anticipated titles, including films from master directors Francis Ford Coppola (Megalopolis) and Yorgos Lanthimos “Kinds of Kindness).

‘Oh Canada’ by Paul Schrader, ‘Bird’ by Andrea Arnold, ‘The Shrouds’ by David Cronenberg, and ‘Anora’ by Sean Baker are also part of the main Competition slate.

Kapadia, an alumna of the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), is best known for her acclaimed documentary “A Night of Knowing Nothing”, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival’s Director’s Fortnight side-bar where it won the Oeil d’or (Golden Eye) award.
