In the chronicles of BTS’s ascent to stardom, there exists a pivotal chapter that almost marked an untimely conclusion to their journey. Their recently released documentary, BTS Monuments: Beyond The Star, reveals a critical juncture when the group, buoyed by the success of Boy In Luv, harbored grand ambitions for their ensuing comeback. In a scene from the documentary, Kim Nam-joon, popularly known as RM, who is also the leader of the BTS group, candidly admitted to feeling the weight of expectations, fearing adverse repercussions for the company should the comeback fall short.
Boy In Luv is a track by BTS that also features American singer Halsey. It was released on February 12, 2014. Serving as the title track for their second mini-album, Skool Luv Affair, and as the fourth track in the repackage album Skool Luv Affair Special Addition, the song has left a lasting imprint on their discography.
However, their hopes were dashed as Danger failed to secure first place, and the song swiftly departed the charts, creating a lose-lose scenario for both the group and the company.
Jin, another member of BTS, reflecting on this tumultuous period, disclosed that the setback occurred when the company was grappling with financial challenges. “As we plummeted with Danger after Boy In Luv, the company happened to be suffering from financial difficulties as well," he said.
The convergence of these unfortunate events cast a shadow of doubt, with Jin expressing that, at that moment, “It felt like it was the end for us."
Amidst burnout, impatience for success, and internal conflicts, BTS found themselves on the brink. Comparisons to other groups’ journeys and the time it took to clinch the coveted first place fueled frustration and arguments among the members.
However, fate took an unexpected turn with their subsequent comeback. Channeling their experiences and emotions, BTS crafted The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1, achieving the long-sought-after first win. Had they succumbed to the despair prompted by Danger, the golden opportunity to soar with I NEED U might have slipped through their fingers. Little did they realise, their trajectory towards becoming the living legends they are today was about to accelerate.
BTS Monuments: Beyond The Stars released on Disney Plus Hotstar on December 20. It follows the growth of the band from its beginnings to transforming them into the global phenomenon they are today.
