Remembering Smita Patil On Her Birth Anniversary: The Actress Whose Smile Captured A Million Hearts
She was the daughter of a Marathi politician, Shivajirao Girdhar Patil and her mother was a social worker.

One of Bollywood’s legendary actresses was Smita Patil. She was known for losing herself in her characters. At the mere age of just 31, she was already an accomplished performer which many actors struggled with in their lifetime. Her expressive eyes, radiant beauty and killer smile won the hearts of the audience and made her a favourite. October 17, marks her birth anniversary and on this important day, let’s take a glimpse into her journey.

Smita Patil was the daughter of Maharashtrian politician father, Shivajirao Girdhar Patil and social worker mother Vidyatai Patil. Did you know how the actress got her name? When she was born, her mother noticed a smile (Smita) on her daughter’s face and named her Smita. This million-dollar smile went on to capture the hearts of millions. However, the same mother once called her a “home breaker”.

Did you know that it was sheer luck that got the Arth actress into the industry in the first place? Reportedly, one day, a photograph of her lying on the street caught the attention of the Doordarshan director and that marked the beginning of her career in the glamour world.

As per reports, Smita Patil was quite reluctant to take up the offer, but after much persuasion, she decided to visit the Doordarshan office. She auditioned for a role which required her to recite a poem or a favourite line. Instead, she reportedly sang Bangladesh’s national anthem- Amar Shonar Bangla. Her voice left a lasting impression and she was immediately chosen as a news anchor. She soon began reading the news in Marathi on Mumbai Doordarshan. Her voice was so popular that non-Marathi speakers would tune in to the channel just to hear her talk.

Her acting journey kicked off with Shyam Benegal’s Charandas Chor, which marked her debut. She later starred in highly acclaimed films and a few of her notable works include– Manthan, Bhumika, Jait Re Jait, Aakrosh, Chakra, Namak Halaal, Bazaar, Shakti, Arth, Mandi, Aaj Ki Awaaz, and Waaris.

Smita Patil’s personal life grabbed media attention after she tied the knot to Raj Babbar, who was already married. This decision did not go down well with her parents. Reportedly, her mother was strongly against the relationship and called her a “home breaker”. Raj Babbar was previously married to Nadira, with whom he had two children- a daughter, Juhi Babbar and a son, Arya Babbar. He had a son with Smita Patil, Prateik Babbar.

Before her passing away, she wished to be dressed like a bride, which was fulfilled by Amitabh Bachchan’s makeup artist, Deepak Sawant. She passed away two weeks after giving birth to her son. Her sudden demise raised questions about possible medical negligence.
