The Boys: How Starlight's Traumatising Origin Differs From The Comics
Starlight, aka Annie January, played by Erin Moriarty in the Boys, is one such character, who has a troubling past in the comics.

The Boys has carved its niche with bold storytelling, unafraid of controversy, as it openly features graphic violence, nudity and explicit language. The show often explores the dark side of those in power and superheroes having their own twisted stories. Starlight, aka Annie January, played by Erin Moriarty, is one such character with a troubling past. While Season 1 shows Chace Crawford’s character, The Deep asking for se**al favours from Annie, but the comics features an even darker scenario. In the original story, it’s not The Deep but Homelander who tries to blackmail her. Other characters like A-Train and Black Noir also pressurise her into se**al acts if she wants to be part of the Seven.

In the comics, Annie’s introduction scene takes a dark and disturbing turn, as she faces horrific abuse from Homelander. Later, when A-Train and Black Noir also force her, it leaves Annie traumatised and she vomits in the bathroom. The TV series, however, changed this storyline. In Season 1, The Deep, with Homelander’s approval, pressurises Annie to engage in se**al activity with him. The only scene taken from the comic is when she is shown throwing up in the bathroom. As the series progresses, Annie exposes The Deep, which leads him to go on a break from the team. Despite this, he joins the supes again and Annie ends up leaving the Seven.

The show later took a more realistic approach, as it shows The Deep going through emotions and past mistakes, showing growth of his character. However, Season 4 nearly brings back the comic accurate moment. In the pilot episode, Homelander, played by Antony Starr, becomes irritated by the team’s loyalty and orders The Deep to perform oral s** with A-Train. Following his command, Deep actually tries to engage with A-Train, but he’s immediately stopped by Homelander himself.

Homelander, who is often described as evil Superman, is not a character that fans should idolise and even Antony Starr, who plays him, agrees with this view. As per CBR, the actor said, “He should not be anyone’s real hero, but I do get a lot of people saying that they have very conflicted feelings about him because he does all this horrible stuff, yet he’s desperately trying to be a good father. He genuinely loves the kid. He just doesn’t know how. Because how would he? He’s never been loved.”

Other than Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty and Chace Crawford, The Boys also stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T Usher, Laz Alonso, Tomer Kapon, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell and Elisabeth Shue.
