Jaya Bachchan is infamous for her interactions with the paparazzi and often giving curt replies to the shutterbugs. One such incident took place in 2022 at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai. As Jaya and her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda made their way to an event, they were followed by several photographers, which Jaya did not appreciate.
She first asked them which publication they worked for and failed to recognise their employer. Later, when one shutterbug stumbled in front of the actress, she said, “Serves you well.” Jaya added, “I hope you double and fall.” Jaya’s video went viral across social media and did not sit well with the netizens.

Now, Jaya Bachchan has come under the scanner after she lost her cool over being addressed as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ in the Parliament. She called out this ‘new style’ of addressing women and added that her identity stands independently of her husband’s name. The uproar caught everyone’s attention. Soon enough, the internet dug out her Rajya Sabha nomination form and pointed out that she had registered herself as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.’
The nomination form that is doing the rounds of X features a government official stamp that is dated back to 2018. The document features her name as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan while Big B’s name has been mentioned as Amitabh Harivanshrai Bachchan. Several social media users shared the document and criticised Jaya Bachchan for her strong reaction.
For the unversed, in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh addressed the actress-turned-politician as “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.” Jaya responded sharply, “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata (It would’ve been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan).” When it was pointed out that her name is officially registered as such, she launched into a critique of the practice.
“Ye jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apne pati ke naam se jaani jaye. Unka koi astitva nahi. Unki koi upalabdh hi nahi hain, apne mein aur astitva nahi hain. Ye jo naya shuru hua hain, I just… (Some new method has emerged that women have to be known by their husband’s name. Women have no identity. They have no achievements, no identity of their own. This new thing, I just…)” she added. Harivansh Narayan Singh noted he read out the name she mentioned in her affidavit.
