Kaun Banega Crorepati is one of the most popular quiz reality shows on Indian television which is currently broadcasting its 15th season. Hosted by veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, the show is loved by fans for the way it imparts knowledge and also makes the audience feel connected to the contestants. This week, Amitabh Bachchan welcomed contestant Madhurima to the hot seat. After answering the fifth question which helped her secure Rs 10,000, Big B asked her about the importance of the amount in her life. Madhurima shared an anecdote from her life and explained why the amount was huge for her family.

Recalling her younger days, the contestant said that in 1992, she used to play cricket and she had injured her hand and her bone was dislocated. Her father used to get his salary on the 7th or 8th day of the month and she got injured on February 4, 1992. She said that, at the end of the month, they wouldn’t have enough money to stretch. When her mother came home, she saw her crying and was tense as she had only Rs 10 and didn’t know what to do.

Madhurima continued and said that her mother took her to her aunt’s place who then took her to the hospital and paid Rs 50 for the plaster. But the doctors told them that she needed surgery to fix the position of the bone that made her father tense as they didn’t have enough money. “My father was an electrician in a small company. That time, there was nobody to pay my bill. Pankaj bhaiya, people used to consider him a goon in our colony but he fought for me that day and my operation happened. I was barely 10 but I understood that my family was in dire need of financial stability,” she added.

Madhurima said that after her injury, her relatives would tell her parents to get her to marry her who was ready to get married to her with dowry. However, her parents chose to educate her and supported her through her dreams.

After she got married, her mother would tell her that they spent a whole Rs 10,000.

Listening to it, Amitabh Bachchan got emotional and urged all the viewers to stop the practice of dowry from society. “And this kind of perception towards women is extremely shameful. I feel completely terrible listening to this. This reality is still prominent in our society and knowing about its existence troubles me,” he added. The actor hailed Madhurima for setting an example of change in this society. He also applauded her for her struggles and positive attitude towards life despite her hardships.
