‘BMC Not Concerned About Health of Mumbaikars’: City Sees Highest Number of Fever & Dengue Cases
Around 5,000 cases of fever were recorded in Mumbai compared to 3,985 in 2022. In the last four years, the city recorded only 1,200 cases of dengue, but the number swelled to 3,753 in September, 2023, BMC data shows

Mumbai saw maximum number of fever and dengue cases in September itself compared to the last five years, according to the latest figures with civic body BMC.

The data shows from 2019 to September, 2023, the number of such patients have increased constantly.

In Mumbai city, 4,357 cases of fever were reported from 2019 to 2021. Around 3,985 cases were found in 2022 but the number touched the 5,000-mark in September, 2023.

In case of dengue, the city saw only 1,200 patients in the last four years, but the number swelled to 3,753 in September, 2023 itself.

BMC identified and destroyed 23.54 lakh breeding spots of mosquitoes in the last three years. Despite BMC taking additional measures to stop the spread of leptospirosis disease, more cases have been reported this year.

Around 1,219 cases of leptospirosis were recorded in the last four years. But this year itself saw 617 cases compared to 346 last year. There has also been an increase in the number of cases of chikungunya this year to 163 compared to zero in 2019.

Congress leader and former leader of opposition Ravi Raja has blamed BMC for the rising cases of fever and dengue in Mumbai. “The captain of the ship who is the administrator is not concerned about the health of Mumbaikars as he is not taking any action after such figures have emerged.” He further blamed the current Maharashtra government and private infrastructure projects for causing breeding spots for mosquitoes in the city.

MNS leader and former corporator Sandeep Deshpande is of the opinion that BMC should have done pest control in the city. “Corporators in BMC should personally do a follow-up on this, which helps control the breeding of mosquitoes in monsoon. This time it has not happened hence we are seeing so many cases emerging.”
