All schools, colleges, and banks will remain shut in the parliamentary constituencies that are going for polls on Monday. Banks will also remain closed on May 20

Polling in 13 Lok Sabha constituencies of Maharashtra, including six in Mumbai, will be held on Monday as a part of the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

The 13 constituencies which are going to polls are Dhule, Dindori, Nashik, Kalyan, Palghar, Bhiwandi, Thane, Mumbai North, Mumbai North-West, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai South-Central, and Mumbai South.

This will also be the final polling process in the state, which has been conducted over five phases starting from April 19. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.

Several institutions and services will also be closed in view of the voting process:

Educational Institutions, Banks Closed

All schools, colleges, and banks will remain shut in the parliamentary constituencies that are going for polls on Monday. Banks will also remain closed on May 20.

Bars, Liquor Shops To Remain Shut

Liquor shops will be closed in the key constituencies like Mumbai, Palghar, Kalyan, and Thane in Maharashtra.

The Election Commission of India has also directed that the area where polls are being held, and the regions around that will adhere to dry days in order to ensure a fair and peaceful voting environment.

Bars and wine shops in Mumbai will reopen at 5 PM on May 20. Apart from Monday, another dry day will be observed in the city on June 4 as the vote-counting process will be underway to declare the election results.

BSE, NSE To Remain Closed

Benchmark Indian equity markets, both BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty, will remain closed on Monday, May 20, on account of Lok Sabha general elections. According to the BSE’s website, equity, equity derivates, and SLB and currency segments will remain closed on Monday.

The market will now be opened on Tuesday, May 21.

This stock market holiday on May 20 is in line with the Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, which recognises the importance of citizens’ participation in the electoral process.
