After a massive security breach in Lok Sabha on Wednesday where two persons jumped the visitors’ gallery during the House proceedings, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar has decided to restrict the entry of visitors till the ongoing Winter Session at Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur.
“After the recent incident in Parliament, all members will be issued only two visitor passes,” said Narwekar on Wednesday.
Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan, who raised the issue of Parliament security breach with the Speaker, told News18, “Two people using gas canisters in the Lok Sabha chamber is a very serious issue. Such incidents can happen here (Maharashtra Assembly) as well hence I request the Speaker to look into the security infrastructure issue”.
Chavan, however, also said he “fully supports” the right of the people of Maharashtra to attend the proceedings of Vidhan Bhavan, but there should be some restrictions. He also said he believed that “completely restricting the entry of people will not be fair” as they come to the assembly from across the state with their issues and problems and with the hope to meet their leader and minister to resolve their problems.
“Session at Nagpur is held once a year. People come here to for better redressal. So, better crowd management should be done; how many people can enter the premise should be regulated but the final call will be taken by the Speaker office,” Chavan had said earlier.
Questioning the security lapse in Parliament, Chavan asked, “How did the metal detectors fail to detect the people. I hope that the Central government will initiate an enquiry into this.”
He further he came to know that one of the four persons detained for the Parliament security breach is from Maharashtra. “I have no individual confirmation on this, but if it is true then such incidents can happen here too.”
