Sandeep Vanga Takes Indirect Dig at Karan Johar? Says 'People Debated on Kabir Singh for Publicity'
Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga opened up about people from Bollywood debating about Kabir Singh after its release.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga looked back at the criticism Kabir Singh received and seemingly took a dig at Karan Johar. The filmmaker, who is preparing for the release of Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, was subjected to strong criticism after he released Shahid Kapoor starrer Kabir Singh. Many accused the film for promoting misogyny and toxic masculinity. Although Sandeep has defended the film time and again, the director seems to have taken a jibe at people in the industry who discussed about the film on public platforms. He accused them of trying to ‘get publicity’ before the release of their own films.

Speaking with The Hindu, the Animal director said that the definition of toxicity differs for everyone. “It depends on how you look at a story and its characters,” he said. “I did not face much criticism for Arjun Reddy, but it was different for Kabir Singh. I don’t want to name anyone but I saw a few people debating about Kabir Singh to get publicity before the release of their own films.”

Sandeep Vanga Reddy Takes an Indirect Jibe at Karan Johar?

“A leading producer-director said he was scared to admit liking Kabir Singh. People acted as though I had made a film on the lines of the French film Irreversible. That film left me disturbed for days, though I could also see the artistic side of it,” Sandeep Vanga Reddy added, seemingly referring to Karan’s statements about Kabir Singh at the Film Companion roundtable session in 2019.

What Karan Johar Said About Kabir Singh:

In 2019, Karan Johar appeared on a roundtable with Film Companion in which he admitted he enjoyed Kabir Singh but was embarrassed to admit it. He said that when he first watched Kabir Singh, he was invested in the ’emotionality and the intensity of the character.’ “I didn’t notice that there could be aspects that could be misogynistic and that would definitely offend viewers. When there were debates around me, I went back and thought, initially there was a point of time that I was embarrased to say that I really loved the film because there were people with such strong voices around me screaming. So I thought I’ll stay silent but I don’t want to lie. I really liked the film.”

When women close to Karan voice their opinions against the film, Karan admitted he had not seen the film from that perspective. He added that he didn’t want to be fake and start saying the ‘right’ things. He said he might be right or wrong to love the film but he cannot deny liking the film.

About Kabir Singh:

Kabir Singh was a remake of Arjun Reddy. The original film starred Vijay Deverakonda and was loved by the Telugu speaking audience. Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh marked Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s directorial debut in Telugu and Hindi, respectively. Despite the cricitism, both films were a massive hit in their respective languages.
