Delhi-Mehrauli Murder Case Updates: Shraddha, who was strangled and chopped into 35 pieces by her live-in partner Aaftab, was reportedly assaulted by him in 2020 and was hospitalised for three days

Delhi-Mehrauli Murder Case Updates: The Delhi Police on Friday issued the first official statement in the Mehrauli murder case of Shraddha Walkar, a Vasai native killed by her live-in partner Aaftab Amin Poonawalla. Police said they have recovered several bone pieces of the deceased from parts of Delhi. Blood samples of Shraddha’s father and brother have been collected to analyse the DNA, police said.

A Delhi court on Friday ordered the Rohini forensic science lab to conduct the narco test of murder accused Aaftab Amin Poonawalla within five days. Poonawalla allegedly strangled Walkar in May and sawed her body into 35 pieces which he kept in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks.

Also, the Delhi Police on Friday sent teams to Mumbai, Gurgaon and Himachal Pradesh to hunt for evidence in the murder case even as the victim’s chats with friends and coworkers since two years indicated she was once beaten so badly that she could not get off the bed.

In another big revelation in the Mehrauli murder case, the Delhi Police said that Poonawalla was “high on marijuana” when he murdered Walker. Also, a Delhi Police team visited the office of a private firm in Gurugram where the accused Poonawalla used to work. Following a search, the police took a plastic bag containing items recovered from bushes in the vicinity of the office. The contents of the bag, however, remain unidentified.

Here are key developments:

• One of Walkar’s friends revealed that he had helped her file an FIR against Poonawalla because he beat her, back in 2020. However, she later said such things happen in a relationship, and denied the police officer who offered to detain Poonawalla, the friend told news agency ANI. “The police officer suggested detaining Aftab for interrogation but she said such things happen in a relationship,” her friend Rahul Rai said.

• A senior member of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) who has been taking Poonawala’s DNA match said that he was “way too normal” about everything and was behaving like a hardcore criminal, The Times of India reported.

• According to another official who visited the crime scene, the accused had removed the evidence from inside the house with quite professionally.

• The Delhi court allowed the police to take the Narco test and Poonawala gave his consent for it on Thursday. When the judge asked if he was aware of the implications of the narco test, the accused said “yes”.

• Nearly 100 lawyers gathered outside the court premises and protested demanding a death penalty for Poonawala. “We demand fair investigation in the matter. It should be decided expeditiously in a fast track court,” a protesting lawyer told PTI .

• Police have recovered 13 body parts, believed to be of the woman, from different areas which will be sent for DNA analysis.
