GATE 2021: Here is a look at how the result is calculated and how ranks are devices to have an estimated score before the official scorecards are released.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is expected to release the result for the Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) 2021 this week. Over 8.59 lakh candidates who had registered for the exam are awaiting their results. This year, several changes were introduced to GATE including the introduction of two new papers – ES (Environmental Science and Engineering) and XH (Humanities and Social Sciences). This further allowed students from the humanities stream to apply.

The lower age cap was also removed. The youngest application received by IIT-Bombay is from a 15-year-old boy from Rajasthan. There has never been an upper age cap for GATE – entrance test for MTech admissions as well as PSU jobs.

For candidates awaiting the result, here is a look at how the result is calculated and how ranks are devices to have an estimated score before the official scorecards are released.

GATE 2021: Marking scheme and Rank Calculation

GATE 2021 result will be uploaded under the GOAPS portal which examines can download by using their registered login credentials. The GATE 2021 scorecard will be uploaded only for qualified aspirants. It will be valid till three years from the date of declaration of result.

The GATE 2021 scorecard will contain important information including candidates’ personal detail, marks scored by the candidates, all India rank, cut-off marks, category rank, and qualifying marks. As the GATE is held for several papers in multiple sessions, IITs opt for the normalization of marks to calculate the GATE 2021 score.

For a particular paper that has been conducted in multiple sessions, marks are normalized by assuming that the distribution of the candidates’ abilities is the same across all the sessions. GATE score for all the papers is further calculated by normalizining the scores of the candidates in multiple session papers, corresponding to the scores obtained by candidates in one session paper.

For GATE 2021, the qualifying marks for general category students in each subject are 25 out of 100.
