The highly anticipated ODI World Cup is scheduled to begin on October 5. The marquee event is being hosted by India and will see participation of 10 countries. New Zealand will take on the reigning champions England, in the opening match of the tournament. Hosts India, will kick off their World Cup journey with a match against Australia who beat them in the ICC World Test Championship final earlier this year. With several exciting matches set to take place, let’s take a look at some major stats of each team playing at the World Cup in India.

Afghanistan

In 2023, Afghanistan competed in 11 ODI games, winning three of them while losing the remaining eight. Ibrahim Zadran has been the top scorer for Afghanistan so far with 478 runs. On the bowling front, Fazalhaq Farooqi has taken most wickets with 15 scalps to his name. Afghanistan currently sit in the ninth spot on the ICC ODI world rankings.

Australia

The Aussies began the year on a winning note, claiming a 2-1 series win over India. However, back-to-back losses against South Africa and India in their next two series bring their ODI tally to five wins and six losses in 11 games this year. Marnus Labuschagne takes the top spot for Australia with 464 runs for his side in 2023 while Adam Zampa’s 15-wicket haul makes him the best bowler of the team. They are currently the third-best team in the world.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh have been quite active this year, having so far competed in 20 ODI games. They won on eight occasions and conceded nine losses with three matches ending without a result. Najmul Hossain Shanto has been the best batter for the Asian side with 698 runs in 15 matches. In the bowling unit, Taskin Ahmed has managed to impress with 21 scalps having played in only 11 matches. Bangladesh take the eighth spot in the ICC ODI rankings.

England

The Englishmen have been in brilliant form this year with seven wins and four losses in the 12 ODI matches they have played. Their latest series win came against Ireland in a 1-0 fashion. Dawid Malan has been the highest scorer for the English side with 591 runs in nine matches with an astonishing average of 73.87. Adil Rashid’s 15-wicket tally makes him the top wicket-taker for his nation. England are ranked as the fifth-best ODI team in the world.

India

Team India will head into the World Cup having won the Asia Cup. The Men in Blue are having a dominant run in 2023 with 15 wins and five losses in 21 ODI games. They have also won four of the five series they have played this year. Shubman Gill’s 1230 runs establish him as the top batter for India in 2023 while Kuldeep Yadav’s 33-wicket haul makes him the most effective bowler in the squad this year.

The Netherlands

The Dutch side have only managed to secure five wins in the 13 ODIs they have played so far. They have lost the remaining seven while the final one played out to be a draw. Despite their poor run, the Netherlands have managed to bag a World Cup spot in India. Max O’Dowd is the top scorer for the Dutch side while Bas de Leede has scalped most wickets this year for the Netherlands. They sit in 14th position of the ICC ODI rankings.

New Zealand

The Kiwis are entering the World Cup as the sixth-best ODI team in the world. However, New Zealand have not been quite consistent throughout the year with eight wins and 11 losses in 20 matches. Daryl Mitchell takes the highest run scorer’s spot for the Kiwis this year. Henry Shipley on the other hand, has scalped the most wickets for the team.

Pakistan

One of Asia’s cricket giants, Pakistan have been fairly consistent this year with 10 wins in 16 ODI matches. They have conceded five losses in 2023. Babar Azam has been the best batter in the team with 745 runs while both Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi take joint first place in bowling with 24 wickets each. They are currently the second-best-ranked ODI team.

South Africa

South Africa cricket team have been on an impressive run this year with eight ODI wins in 12 matches played. They have remained unbeaten in their last four series against England, West Indies, the Netherlands and Australia. Temba Bavuma has been the highest scorer for the team while Marco Jansen has scalped the most wickets.

Sri Lanka

The Lankan Lions have recorded 14 wins and conceded eight losses in the 22 ODIs they have played in 2023. Pathum Nissanka has scored the most runs for the Asian outfit and Maheesh Theekshana has claimed the most number of wickets with 31 scalps to his name.
