NEET 2021: While the exam pattern is expected to be tweaked to offer more internal choice, the syllabus remains unchanged

The medical entrance exam for admission MBBS, BDS courses will be held on August 1. Over 10 lakh candidates apply for the medical entrance exam every year. Last year, as many as 15,97,435 candidates registered for NEET, and in 2019 as many as 15,19,375 registered for NEET.

The exam will be held in offline mode and only once a year. Earlier there were speculations that the exam will be held twice, however, after discussions between the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, it was decided to hold NEET only once this year.

While it is still expected that the exam will have more questions and hence students will have internal choices in the exam, however, syllabus remains uncut.  For students appearing for NEET 2021, here is a look at the syllabus –

PHYSICS

Class 11 — Physical world and measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body, Gravitation, Properties of Bulk Matter, Thermodynamics, Behaviour of Perfect Gas and Kinetic Theory, Oscillations and Waves.

Class 12 –Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices

CHEMISTRY

Class 11 –Basic Concepts of Chemistry, Structure of Atom, Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, States of Matter: Gases and Liquids, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions, Hydrogen, s-Block Element (Alkali and Alkaline earth metals), Some p-Block Elements, Organic Chemistry- Some Basic Principles and Techniques, Hydrocarbons, Environmental Chemistry.

Class 12– Solid State, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Surface Chemistry, General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements, p- Block Elements, d and f Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers, Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen, Biomolecules, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life.

BIOLOGY

Class 11 –Diversity in Living World, Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants, Cell Structure and Function, Plant Physiology, Human physiology.

Class 12 –Reproduction, Genetics and Evolution, Biology and Human Welfare, Biotechnology and Its Applications, Ecology, and environment.

What is the usual pattern?

As per the usual exam pattern, NEET has 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), 45 each from physics and chemistry, each and 90 from Biology. The total marks will be 720 and the duration of the test will be three hours.

For every right answer, students are awarded four marks. For every wrong answer, one mark is deducted. NEET is conducted in 11 languages including English and Hindi. Examinees can choose any one option for the medium of NEET question paper during filling up the application form. The option once chosen cannot be changed.
